Effective Couples Therapy

  • Treating relationship-specific concerns and developing more fulfilling relationships.

The goal of any good couples therapist is to help couples develop the tools they need to improve communication, negotiate differences and solve problems in a healthy and relationship-affirming manner. Generally, in my couples therapy sessions I glean insight into the couple's standard approach to these issues simply by creating a neutral, non-threatening atmosphere and observing their interactions - verbal and non-verbal alike.

The range of issues that bring couples to my door is varied, but common problems include ongoing conflict, illness, infidelity, family of origin issues and disconnects on sexuality, finances and parenting styles. In addition to introducing new techniques for listening and communication, I teach new ways to inject romance back into relationships and help each patient appreciate the unique gifts that their partner brings to the table.

Couples Therapy for Abuse

In some cases, the central source of conflict in a relationship is an alcohol or drug abuse problem. In these instances, research has shown couples therapy to be a very effective treatment method in the recovery process of the addicted partner while also mending the damage that their primary relationship has sustained from the abuse.

My approach to couples therapy for abuse of drugs or alcohol involves work with each partner to rebuild a relationship that supports abstinence. This includes in-office therapy sessions and "homework" assignments that are designed to encourage healthy activities and increase positive feelings along with constructive communication. This goes a long way towards reducing the relationship distress that can increase the risk of relapse while also repairing the bond that has been weakened by drug and alcohol abuse.
