Supportive Group Therapy

  • Treating relationship and specific concerns (e.g., divorce, mid-life issues, eating disorders) within the context of a group interaction.

By providing support and feedback from other individuals struggling with similar issues, group therapy can function as an excellent supplemental treatment for a variety of health concerns and challenges. In my group therapy sessions, I help each individual identify common themes among group members and encourage patients to use their observations to reshape the way they see themselves and others. More so than any other psychotherapy technique, the group therapy experience offers a unique opportunity to put these new tools into practice.

The Principles of Group Therapy

Renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Irvin D. Yalom identified a set of therapeutic principles that help describe the beneficial nature of group therapy in the treatment of various health and wellness issues. Dr. Yalom correctly identifies the concept of universality as one such principle. By creating an opportunity for patients to recognize their own experiences and feelings among other group members, this new sense of "universality" allows patients to begin to gain a sense of validation for their problems and develop an understanding that they are not alone in their plight.

Some of the additional principles or benefits of group therapy identified by Dr. Yalom include:

  • Altruism
  • Instillation of hope
  • Imparting information
  • Development of socializing techniques
  • Imitative behavior
