Therapy for Grief

  • Gaining insight to emotions and dealing with loss

In general, the word grief describes a person's response to death or loss. The actual experience of grief, however, is a different animal entirely. The grieving process is as unique to each individual as a fingerprint, and as such, requires a treatment plan that is equally distinct. For each of my grief therapy patients, I develop an individualized approach according to their current state of mind and the circumstances surrounding their condition. As we progress through treatment I will adjust this plan as necessary in response to the pace and rhythm of the recovery process.

When is Grief Therapy Necessary?

While grief in any measure is a valid and painful emotion, it is important to draw a distinction between a normal reaction to loss and one that may require specialized therapy for grief. Generally, I recommend seeking therapy for grief when the reaction is prolonged, the response is exaggerated and or when the reaction is being masked through some other somatic or behavioral symptom.

My Approach

Though it varies on a case by case basis, my approach to grief therapy is generally to "accompany" rather than "lead" patients down the path to recovery. Treatment options may include individual sessions, couples therapy or even group counseling. Please contact me to discuss additional treatment options or to schedule an introductory appointment. I can be reached by phone at 267-679-8712. Appointments are available Monday through Thursday, 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. or on Saturdays by request.
